Brake Caliper Rebuild: How-To

If your brakes feel spongy, leak fluid, or your pistons are sticking, it might be time to rebuild your brake caliper. Luckily, with a BrakeCrafters Caliper Rebuild Kit, you can restore your braking system’s performance with just a few basic tools and a bit of patience. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get the job done right.

Step 1: Set Out the Components from the Kit

Start by laying out all the components from your BrakeCrafters kit. This typically includes new pistons, seals, dust boots, O-rings, bleed nipple screws/caps, red rubber grease, and other necessary hardware. Organizing the parts beforehand makes assembly easier and ensures you’re not missing anything.

Step 2: Apply Red Rubber Grease to the Caliper

Before installing any seals, apply a thin layer of red rubber grease to the inside of the caliper bore. This helps prevent corrosion and ensures the new seals and pistons move smoothly once assembled.

Step 3: Grease and Insert the Seals

Next, lightly coat the new seals with red rubber grease. Carefully insert each seal into its corresponding groove inside the caliper. Make sure they sit flat and aren’t twisted — a proper fit is key to preventing leaks and ensuring smooth piston movement.

Step 4: Grease and Insert the Pistons

Apply a small amount of red rubber grease to the sides of the pistons. Gently press each piston into the caliper bore, taking care not to damage the new seals. The pistons should slide in smoothly — if you feel resistance, double-check that the seals are properly seated.

Step 5: Install the Bleed Nipple and Cap

Finally, add the bleed nipple screw to the caliper and fit the new bleed nipple cap from the kit. This small step helps protect the nipple from dirt and moisture, ensuring easy bleeding later.

Final Checks

Before reinstalling the caliper, double-check your work:

  • All seals are seated properly.
  • Pistons move freely.
  • The bleed nipple and cap are secure.

Once satisfied, you can reinstall the caliper, bleed the brakes, and enjoy smooth, reliable braking performance again.
